In organic farming, the respect for the soil, for every cultivated plant and every insect that is useful for our crops, is fundamental. For example, at our organic farm in Carmignano, all procedures are carried out when the earth is in the right condition. Where possible we avoid using farm machinery after any rain to limit the trampling of the soil.
Being organic means being continually present on our land to monitor any disease in order to intervene promptly with natural products to take preventative action.
This is also true for winter pruning or for all the spring and summer procedures such as vine training and suckering (we know this is very technical terminology!) which allow us to manage the foliage and their ventilation. This limits the development of damp micro-climates, the cause of the main fungus pathogens. We also work to limit any infestations, making use of water and nutrients which are naturally present in the soil.
“What is important to underline is that not abusing the land is an extremely important principle, but leaving fields uncultivated in the belief that this way the land and any plants won’t be damaged does not mean being organic”.
Edoardo, founder of Agricola Pieve dei Medici
There is much more to tell about our every day life in our organic journey: to protect the fertility of the land we use only green manure products, paying great attention to the maintenance and improvement of the soil. What is more, our electric energy comes exclusively from solar powered sources.
To conclude, at Pieve dei Medici “organic” is not just a simple word used to have a legal recognition, it is at the basis of all our genuine products with their unforgettable flavours, difficult to imitate. Our farm is lucky to lie on land that is rich with clay and marlstone which together with the favourable exposition and the various micro-climates of the Carmignano area, play a fundamental role in helping us produce superior wines and oil.
No secret formula, just effort, dedication, respect and knowledge.
