Pieve dei Medici:
OUR CARMIGNANO WINES

A journey through history, passion and land

Our Carmignano wines are produced on a vineyard of just over 4 hectares.
The main vine cultivated is Sangiovese together with Cabernet Sauvignon without forgetting local vines such as Canaiolo, Colorino, Trebbiano and San Colombano, which are used in the production of our precious Vin Santo.

These wines are the purest expression of a farming concept executed with measured and focussed actions, both on the plants and on the land: these actions allow us to attain extremely high quality grapes which we transform through vinifcation into a real sensory journey, from the vineyard to the glass.

Pieve dei Medici: the birth of an historic wine

Carmignano DOCG: the origins and anecdotes surrounding a wine in symbiosis with the land

The origins of Carmignano wines date back to VII B.C and many artefacts that testify this, such as utensils, wine jars, drinking vessels and even sieves have been found in the small town of Artimino, a short distance from Carmignano.

Furthermore, the Florence State Archives displays a rental contract with a date of 804 B.C which provides evidence of how olive trees and vines for the production of oil and wine were already being cultivated. This was until 1396 when the first document was drawn up by a Carmignano notary, Ser Lapo Mazzei, detailing how a merchant from Prato had ordered fifteen loads of Carmignano wine, paying “16 lire per load”, a price which was four times higher than the wines sold in the area. This indicates the magnificence and consideration shown to Carmignano wines at the time.

In 1716, the Granduca Cosimo III De’ Medici released the Bando Mediceo containing strict regulations for the production, harvesting and commerce of what is known today as Carmignano wine, restricting its production to a designated area known as the“Barco Reale”.

HOW WE PRODUCE OUR WINES

Ancient methods which combine contemporary safeguarding

A journey which begins amongst the vineyards of Pieve dei Medici, where every step is a promise of excellence.
The care of the grapes in the vineyard, a critical and tireless part of our production process which is followed by the harvesting which generally takes place during the second half of September and is carried our totally by hand.

Once the grapes have been picked with the utmost attention, our dedication to excellence continues in our cellar where the fruit is meticulously selected and turned into wine. Every step is guided by a main objective: that of preserving and protecting every unique characteristic of our terrain..

A fundamental aspect of our production philosophy is that of using the yeasts which are naturally present in the grapes, in order to preserve the distinctive aromas and flavours of the fruit.

Our commitment to quality does not end here: the casks used to age our Carmignano wines are made of Tuscan durmast and chestnut, precious woods which give our wines extraordinary complexity and depth together with the distinctive character which reflects the essence of our region.

A young company, between origins and the future

Agriculture as both a legacy and a challenge

“Century old traditions generate something that is unique, characteristic and extremely genuine. However, tradition also needs modern knowledge in order to improve: my name is Edoardo and I have a passion for agriculture, which stems from my childhood and has been transmitted to me from my family,in particular from my grandfather, Piero, who led me to take on this role which is a way of life, a vocation, not just a job”.
